To get your broker license in Florida, you must have completed 24 months as an active real estate sales associate within the past five years. This is the state requirement for how long you have to be a real estate agent before getting a broker license in Florida.
Step 1. Complete A 72-hour FREC-approved pre-licensing course for brokers
You must successfully complete a 72-hour Frec-approved pre-licensing course for brokers to upgrade your real estate sales associate license and become a licensed broker in Florida. Remember that the Florida Real Estate Commission must approve all Florida real estate licensing courses.

You must pass the end of course exam and receive your certificate before taking your state exam.
Step 2. Submit an application for broker license and pay the license fee
You can apply for your Florida broker license online. You can access the application forms by visiting the DBPR website. There is also a PDF application form available to download if you prefer to send your application by post. Remember to include payment of the license application fee to avoid any delays in your application approval.

Please note that the enactment of HB 1091 means that the initial licensure fees have been reduced by 50% for Fiscal Year 2024/2025.
The DBPR generally takes 4-6 weeks on average to process and approve your Florida real estate license application.
An applicant will be notified when the examination is approved by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
Step 3. Submit Your Fingerprints
You must remember to submit your digital fingerprints when applying for a real estate broker license in Florida. You can schedule an appointment to have your fingerprints scanned at Pearson Vue online or by calling the following number: (877) 238-8232.
You must submit your fingerprints electronically before your license application can be approved. Your prints will not be shared with any other agencies.

4. Pass your Florida State Real Estate Broker Examination
Before you can take your Florida broker state exam, the state must approve your application for licensure. Once your application for a broker license has been approved, you will receive an admissions authorization letter.
NOTE: You must bring your printed course completion certificate and your authorization letter to sit your broker license exam.
The state exam is a 100-question multiple-choice test with a passing score of 75%.
The state exam includes 40 questions based on real estate law, 40 questions based on real estate principles and practices, 5 questions based on mathematics, and 5 questions based on a closing statement, worth 2 points per question.

Step 5. Activate your Florida Broker License
Once you have passed your broker pre licensing education requirements, passed your state exam, and received your broker license for Florida, you must submit the DBPR RE 13 Broker Transaction form to activate your Florida Broker License.

What is the difference between a real estate agent and a real estate broker?
A real estate agent in Florida is a licensed real estate sales associate. A sales associate must work under the guidance and supervision of a licensed real estate broker. A real estate broker is an agent who has passed their broker license exam and holds a broker license. A real estate broker can own their own real estate firm and hire sales associates to work for them.
What if I have experience as a Broker in another state?
If you have experience working as a licensed broker in another state, you can either apply for your real estate sales associate license or your Florida broker license. You must have two years’ experience within the past five years in your current state to apply for a broker’s license in Florida. However, this would not be a mutual recognition application. You will still be required to meet the education requirements and take the 72 hour broker course.

Does Florida have Mutual Recognition for Broker Licensing?
Florida has mutual recognition with 10 states, and if you already have a real estate license, you may apply for a Florida license under mutual recognition.
Note that you will still be required to take the Florida Core Law Exam at a Pearson Vue testing center.

When should I apply for the Florida state exam?
Before you can take your state exam, DBPR must approve your broker license application. Once an application is approved, DBPR will issue an ID number. You can check the application status at MyFloridaLicense.
You will need the application ID number to schedule your broker exam. You should schedule the exam as quickly as possible after completing your broker course to give you the best chance of passing the test.

What if I fail the Florida real estate pre licensing exam?
Florida’s 30-Day Retake Requirements: If you do not pass the Florida real estate broker course exam on your first attempt, you will be given a link to a second final exam. According to Florida real estate regulations, the second exam cannot be taken until thirty days after the first exam. The other option is to retake the course again without waiting for 30 days. *MLS Campus offers both options free, as long as your course is still active.
What if I fail the Florida State real estate broker exam?
If you fail the state exam, you may retake it as many times as necessary as long as the broker course certificate and the state broker application are valid. The broker course certificate is valid for 2 years from the completion date. The state application is valid for 2 years from the approval date. You must wait at least 24 hours before scheduling a retake of the broker state exam with Pearson Vue.
